
Mary Jane Marshall, age 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday morning the 16th of March, while on hospice care at Habour Health Care in Port Charlotte. Born October 8th 1917 to Helen Strauss and Norman Synder in Harrisburg, PA, The Jersey College for Women (2 years), The Catherine Gibbs School of N.Y (2 years), were the schools attended by Mary Jane. In 1937 Mary Jane travelled by ocean liner to England to visit family. While there she witnessed the coronation of King George the V. Mary Jane married Richard Walker Marshall on June 17, 1938. Starting a life together in Washington, DC. They eventually settled and raised a family in Metuchen, NJ from 1955-1977. In Metuchen Mary Jane was active in The Women's Club, serving as a Club president for several years. She enjoyed playing golf at the Metuchen Country Club, attending the Dutch Reform Church and playing bridge with her many close and dear friends of the Beacon Hill Neighborhood Group. Richard and Mary Jane retired in the sunshine state in 1977, along a golf course in Rotonda West. Playing golf, attending the Faith Lutheran Church of Rotonda and playing plenty of bridge with their new set of friends was the norm for Richard and Mary Jane. Best friend and partner passed away in 1997 after 59 wonderful years of marriage. Mary Jane moved to South Port Square in 2007. She quickly made many new friends while playing bridge, going on bus field trips and attending the First United Methodist Church of Punta Gordo. Friends would comment on her sense of fashion style and her upbeat nature. The many pictures she kept in plain sight was a testament to her love of family.
Family members include very special sister in law Connie, David, Sandy, Andrew Newell and Thomas Goodgame. The Marshall clan ( 3 generations) Sue, Don, Barb, Jesse, Christina, Sophie, Cody, Megan, Chelsea and Tucker, Jen, Chris, Abigail, Isebel Strogran. Also Bruce and Beverly Synder, Mary's Jane's proud connection to the local British American Club. A few very clear friends include Genny and Pete Hill, Dot Rankin, Eileen Bosek and Elaine Simcock.
A memorial gathering will be held at Gables East, South Port Square, Monday morning March 21st at 10:00 a.m. Donations may be sent to The First United Method Church of Punta Gorda. Mary Jane would tell her many friends that she is happy- happy having known all of you. Mary Jane Marshall. Rest in peace.
