Bill filled over a million prescriptions as owner and pharmacist of Lemon Bay Drugs, Inc. in Englewood, FL 1965 - 2000 and Co-owner of 3 other Lemon Bay Drugs in North Port, East Englewood, Port Charlotte and co-owned Trafford Drugs in Immokalee, FL. He was known for his kindness, generosity and integrity.
He was born in Welch, WV March 15, 1932 to Haven Steele Shumate and Fleeta Moore Shumate. He graduated from South Charleston High School 1950 and attended West Virginia University, graduating from the School of Pharmacy 1954. After college he worked at South Hills Pharmacy in Charleston, WV. Served in the United States Army in 1955 -1957 and honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant from the Charleston Army Reserve postal unit in 1963.
Bill moved to Florida in 1964 and soon after opened Lemon Bay Drugs at 955 South McCall Road.,Englewood. He was a member of the Florida Pharmacy Association and the West Virginia Pharmacy Association. Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Clella Wheeler Shumate, children Dale Shumate and Melissa, Karen Shumate-Lehmann and 5 grandchildren.
