

Barbara was born in Utica, New York, on February 14, 1936. She graduated from Marathon High School in 1955 and went on to attend St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Utica, graduating in 1957.
Barbara became one of the first nurse practitioners in New York State and the first in Cortland County. She was a passionate advocate for women’s health and was instrumental in the establishment of the Women’s Healthcare Center, leaving a lasting impact on countless patients and families throughout her distinguished career.
On August 22, 1959, Barbara married Ronald John Young. Together they shared 44 years of marriage and raised three beloved children: Ellen, Robert, and Richard.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Young; her daughter, Ellen Nash; her siblings, Henry Ryan, Francis Ryan, Virginia Swartout, Nancy Carranti, John Ryan, and Robert "Mike" Ryan.
She is survived by her loving sons, Robert Young (Andrea) and Richard Young (Karen); her son-in-law, Donald Nash; her cherished grandchildren, Shawn Nash (Ashley), Connor Nash (Chelsea), Brianna Young, Mary Kogut (Bradley), Joshua Young, Molly Young, Kate Levengood (Jason), Kristyn Van Patten; her five great-grandchildren, Sophia, Brooks, Kennedy, Everly, and Callan; and her sister, Ellen O'Hearn. She is also survived by her devoted partner, Rick Boyd, all of whom brought tremendous joy and pride into her life.
Barbara was a kind and steady presence whose warmth was felt by everyone who crossed her path. Her compassion was evident not only in her professional life, but also in the love and care she gave to her family and friends. She especially enjoyed spending time at the family camp on the St. Lawrence River. She also found joy in crafting, quilting, singing, and playing golf.
Barbara will be remembered for her unwavering faith, quiet strength, generous heart, and gentle spirit that made people feel safe, welcomed, and truly seen. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Celebration of Life for Barbara will be held at 11:00am on August 1, 2026, at Saint Leo’s Church in Tully, New York. A reception will immediately follow in the church recreation hall, and all are welcome to attend.
