

Irene R. Varano, 78, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2012 surrounded by her loving family after battling a long illness. She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Joseph P. Varano; parents, Peter, Sr. and Theresa Mastro; brother, Joseph Mastro of Florida; and son-in-law, Rodney Darrow; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dominick L. and Josephine Varano; brothers-in-law, Dominick Varano, Jr. and Frank (Rocky) Varano. She is survived by her children, Devina Darrow, Vestal; Joseph T. Varano, Binghamton; Annette Blodgett, Endwell; five grandchildren, Joseph and Krista Darrow; Vincenzo Varano; Rita Varano; Andrea and Matthew Merritt; Nicholas Blodgett; five great grandchildren, Austin Darrow, Sophia Varano, Alexis and Abigail Merritt, and Madison Darrow; brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Shirley Mastro, Binghamton; sisters-in-law, Frances (Dolly) Critelli, Jenna Varano, and Margaret Varano; many nieces and nephews; very special friend, Gloria Sullivan who was like a sister to her. Irene was a hairdresser and proprietor of Reene’s Beauty Salon on the east side of Binghamton for over twenty years before taking a career at IBM where she retired as a member of the Quarter Century Club. After her retirement from IBM, she worked at Sam’s Club for 13 years. Irene was the most selfless woman you would ever want to meet. She built her life around her family and to them she was fiercely loyal. Her strong will and dedicated work ethic set the example for us to live by. Irene touched everyone’s heart she met and her caring and generous way of living will leave a lasting memory that no one will soon forget. She loved to cook and entertain for the entire family and has left us with wonderful memories that we will never forget. We all know you are now an angel in heaven watching over us. You have left a legacy of beautiful people behind and we will miss you more than you can imagine.
Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 8:45 AM from the James V. DeMarco & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson and continue at 9:30 AM in St. Mary of the Assumption Church where a Funeral Mass will be offered. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the DeMarco & Son Funeral Home Friday, July 20th from 5 – 8 PM. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Marhaba, the members of Hospice and all the doctors and nurses who took such great care of our mother in her time of need.
