Joan Larson, 87, peacefully passed away on December 24th, 2023. Born on August 13th, 1936, in Philadelphia to Warren and Dorothy Hatzell, Joan's journey was one of love, family, and unwavering community spirit.
Joan will now be joyfully reunited with her late husband, LeRoy Larson, and her cherished Chocolate Lab companion, Hays. She is survived by her five devoted children: Fred Larson, Sue (Michael) Kovacic, Nancy (Robert) Waxer, Heather (Phil) Hudak, and Kristina (Michael) Holahan. Her love extended to the grandchildren she adored: Danielle (Dustin) Keys, Jessica (Stefan) Singer, Kyle Kovacic, Lauren Kovacic, Cara Walker, Ava Hudak, Miranda Larson, Jakob Holahan, McKenzie Holahan, and Joseph Hudak. Her sweet great-grandchildren, Henry, George, and William, brought immeasurable joy to her later years.
Joan's commitment to community was evident throughout her life. An active member of the Binghamton community, she dedicated her retirement years to spending time with her grandchildren, volunteering at Chenango Forks Elementary, participating in Meals on Wheels, and being a proud member of the Chenango Bridge Garden Club.
Her spunky spirit, evident in every endeavor, defined her character. Joan's gardens, cultivated with love and care, were a testament to her green thumb and passion for nature. Among her many talents, she will be particularly remembered for her homemade lollipops that brought sweetness to the lives of those fortunate enough to taste them.
Joan Larson's absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered for the love, laughter, and kindness she shared with all who were blessed to be a part of her life.
A celebration of Joan's life will be held privately with family on January 5th. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause dear to Joan's heart.
"Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy."
