

Karen Nelson, 80, died of pneumonia complications on Thursday, October 21, 2021. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Anthony Nelson, brother-in-law Eric Nelson, and parents Hannah & Charles Stanek. Karen is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Patty & Daniel Griffiths and Amy & Matt Ivan; grandchildren DJ & Katie Griffiths and Annabelle & Samantha Ivan, her brother Joe Stanek and sister-in-law Betty Spinelli, brother-in-law & sister-in-law Pete and Kathy Nelson and sister-in-law Roberta Nelson.
Karen was a lifetime resident of Binghamton and Port Dickinson. She graduated from Binghamton Central High School. She enjoyed her years working at Broome Tioga BOCES in the work/study program. Karen’s giving nature was also evident in her years of volunteer service at St. Catherine’s Elementary School. She was a long time member of St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Karen will be remembered for her caring, kind heart, selflessness, and being the “world’s greatest mom”. Family meant everything to her and she always placed the needs of others above her own. Karen lived by the golden rule and valued family, friends, and the importance of taking time to enjoy the simple things in life. She was an avid reader and enjoyed road trips and playing bridge with her friends each week.
A Private Service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the American Cancer Society, or Catholic Charities of Broome County.
