Dorothy Lorraine Shookhoff (known as Lorraine to family and friends) passed away peacefully after a long and fulfilling life. She was raised in Ozone Park, NY, where she remembered a childhood with ponies in the backyard which her father Harry would hitch to a sleigh for her and her friends to take winter rides through the neighborhood.
Lorraine graduated from Hicksville High School and went on to earn a degree from Adelphi University. She had a long career as an elementary school teacher in the Middle Country Central school district, where she was devoted to her students. In retirement, Lorraine enjoyed reconnecting with many of the children she taught over the years.
Along with her husband, Donald, who was also a teacher, Lorraine shared a love for travel. They took many camping trips across the United States and visited many countries around the world. After Donald’s passing, Lorraine fulfilled a lifelong dream by traveling to Australia.
In her final years, Lorraine lived at Jefferson’s Ferry Senior Living in Setauket, NY, where she was able to celebrate her 90th birthday surrounded by close friends.
Lorraine was predeceased by her husband Donald; her son, David; her brother, Stanley; and her parents, Dorothy and Harry. She is survived by her longtime caregivers, Janis and Mickey Strachan; her sister-in-law, Connie Ernenwein; and her niece and nephews, Ellen, Robert, and John Ernenwein.
A committal service will be held at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, located at 2030 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale, NY 11735, on September 4, 2025, at 1:00 pm.
