Gene was born on January 28, 1935, in Zero Branco, Italy. Though born in Italy, his mother was an American citizen, and by birth he was proudly an American as well. At the age of 16, Gene made the courageous journey to the United States to begin a new life, embracing the opportunities of his homeland with determination, resilience, and hope. He carried his Italian heritage with pride throughout his life, cherishing family, faith, and tradition above all else.
Gene was the beloved husband of 63 years to his devoted wife, Evelyn. He was a loving and dedicated father to Eugene (Kathleen), Richard (Kathy), Paul (Laurie), Kathy Koprowski (Mike), and John. He was the cherished grandfather of Caitlin Zampieron-Foito (Danny), Kevin Zampieron, Patrick Zampieron, Richard Zampieron, Alexander Zampieron, Paulie Zampieron Jr., Nicholas Zampieron, Sianna Zampieron, Arianna Zampieron, Justin Koprowski, Matthew Koprowski, Julia Koprowski, and Jacalyn Zampieron. He was also an adored brother to Alexander Zampieron (Daryl), Louis Zampieron, and Mariuccia Zampieron (Castan).
Gene was a proud Army veteran who served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division, famously known as the “Screaming Eagles.” His service to his country was one of his greatest honors, and he spoke of it with immense pride throughout his life.
A man of deep faith, Gene was a devoted member of St. Gerard Majella RC Church and an active member of the Knights of Columbus. For more than 40 years, he generously served as an usher at numerous venues, including Shea Stadium and the US Open Tennis Championships, greeting countless guests with his warm smile and welcoming presence.
Above all, Gene adored his family. Nothing brought him greater joy than being surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He also found great happiness tending to his vegetable garden and fig tree, nurturing it with the same patience and care that he gave to those he loved. Gene was also a brilliant historian with a deep passion for world history.
