Harriet Elizabeth Carver Tobin was born on April 17, 1923 in Angola, Indiana. The daughter of Lewis and Rose Carver, Harriet grew up on a small family farm with eight siblings during the Great Depression. She married Charles “Russ” Tobin on Memorial Day in 1947. The young couple had two sons and Harriet went to meet her husband by moving her two young sons by herself to Long Island in 1952 over a then two-day trip. Harriet lived and worked in Port Washington for 20 years, eventually moving to Mount Sinai. A devout proponent of education and independence, Harriet worked in the Port Washington school district, as a librarian for the Brookhaven National Laboratory and as the secretary the Mount Sinai Congregational Church, before retiring to spend more time with her family and her volunteer commitments. A lover of life, Harriet spent her time in retirement planting gorgeous flowers, banning ballads at the dinner table and running up and down her house stairs backwards. The heart of her family, Harriet’s life and legacy is celebrated by her family - her brother John Carver, her sister Gale Arena, her children, Lew and John, her grandchildren, Jesse Ky, Löki Gale, Sasha Elise, Liana Rose and Deni Anne and great grandchild Elijah Finn.
Funeral arrangements have been made at Mount Sinai Congregational Church this Friday at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Mount Sinai Congregational Church.
