Michael J. Melendez of Mount Sinai, NY, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on September 24, 1934, in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, Michael was a devoted husband, beloved family member, and cherished friend.
Michael was the beloved husband of Judy, with whom he shared 50 wonderful years of marriage. He was a loving brother-in-law to Lois Defrietus (Skip) and Jean M. Clarry. A devoted uncle, he will be dearly missed by his nieces and nephews: James Clarry, Timothy Gentz (Dawn), Coreen Clarry-Kelly, Jason Defrietus (Ann), Sean Defrietus (Nicole), and Michael Defrietus (Beth). He was also an adored great-uncle to 12. Michael is also survived by his brother, David Jourdan and children from a previous marriage, Michael J. Melendez Jr. and Gloria Alcerro.
Michael was known for his gentle, kind, and generous spirit. He found great joy in spending time with his wife, sister-in-laws, and extended family. A passionate traveler, Michael and Judy explored the world together, making unforgettable memories on trips to China, Africa, Europe, and countless cruises. Michael’s warmth, kindness, and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love and compassion will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
A dedicated professional, Michael loved working in sales and was the manager of Liberty Travel, where he had the privilege of helping many people fulfill their travel dreams. His warm and caring nature made him a favorite among colleagues and clients alike.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Michael’s life at a visitation on Thursday, April 3, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 4839 Nesconset Highway, Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025, at 10:30 AM at the Chapel at St. Charles, 200 Belle Terre Road, Port Jefferson, NY 11777. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery, 210 Princeton Blvd., Calverton, NY 11933.
