He was the beloved husband of Dorothy Meade, for 54 wonderful years, with whom he had two children, Amy (Dan) and Geoff (Karen). He adored, and was so very proud of, his four grandchildren: Ella, Clara, Avery, and Austin. He cherished his time with family and dear friends.
Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of Vernon and Edna Meade. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Loyola University in Maryland. After a year of teaching high school chemistry, he chose a fulfilling career in Scouting as a Scout Executive and beloved Camp Director at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp.
Stu began his involvement in the Boy Scouts of America at the age of 8, in June of 1954, when he joined Cub Scout Pack 674 in Baltimore, Maryland. Stu remained active as a youth and earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1961. During his high school and college years, he worked as a member of the Broad Creek Scout Camp serving in various positions from instructor to area director to program director. After graduation from college, Stu joined the professional staff of the Lancaster County Council as a District Executive. Stu’s next assignment was in Providence, Rhode Island where he directed the high school co-ed career education program.
In 1979, he moved to Suffolk County, NY where he served the Nathaniel Woodhull District in Brookhaven Town serving over 3,000 youth members. Stu also served as Camp Director of Baiting Hollow Scout Camp during that period. Stu then served as a Field Director for the borough of Brooklyn, supervising 7 full time professionals and 10 part-time employees. During that time, Stu was also selected to manage and direct the brand new $7 million dollar camp in Alpine, New Jersey. Stu came back to Suffolk County in 1998 to pick up the struggling summer camp program at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. Stu increased the camp attendance from 423 scouts to 17,850 campers in his first year back. After retiring in 2004, he continued to serve as a Business Manager, Chief Camp Fundraiser, Memorial Service Director, and on the organizing committee for the yearly retirement reunion.
This year marked Stu’s 70th year in scouting. He was recognized with a new pavilion bearing his name at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. This pavilion will be used as the check-in area. Everyone coming to any organized event at camp will be checked-in at the Stuart Meade Reception Area.
Stu's influence extended far beyond the campgrounds. His enthusiasm for Scouting and his ability to inspire and mentor young Scouts were central to his work. He was not only a guiding force for many, but also a cherished friend and mentor to his colleagues. His dedication to fostering a positive and inclusive environment made a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
While his professional achievements were significant, Stu's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He balanced his commitment to Scouting with a deep affection for his loved ones. He also demonstrated a deep faith and devotion to his church that exemplified the values he championed. Stu was appointed as a Deacon of the Lutheran Church where he actively served as the Lutheran Chaplain at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. In addition, he was the treasurer of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church for the last 16 years, a role he maintained even his final days.
As we remember Stu, we celebrate a life well-lived. Stu’s legacy is a testament to the countless lives he touched and the positive changes he helped to create. His contributions will not be forgotten, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
He leaves his loving wife Dorothy; his children, Amy (Dan) and Geoff (Karen); grandchildren, Ella, Clara, Avery and Austin; brother Charles (Penny); sister Lucinda “Cindi”; and many nephews and nieces, and many dear friends and loved ones. He was predeceased by his sisters, Catherine “Peggy” and Dorothy “Dot.”
