Walter Kearns, Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 22nd, 2023. He is survived by his first wife, Jane; his children, Paul and wife, Linda; son, Matthew, and daughter, Jenevieve. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amanda, Leanne and Matthew.
Walter, also known as “Wally” or ‘Poppi” to his grandchildren, graduated from Xavier High School. Throughout his life, he remained actively involved in Alumni projects. He even authored a book on all his classmates! He spent countless hours and travel to research accurate information.
He continued onto Manhattan College where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. Wally, then worked for AIL, a division of the Eaton Corporation. He spent 37 years invested with the company, which specialized in defense aircraft. Walter also served on the North Shore school Board of Education for several years.
Following retirement, Wally was employed as a consultant for a water proofing company. He absolutely loved spending time with clients. It was a joke that the amount of time he spent traveling around the Island and meeting with clients probably didn’t amount to much in commission. However, he loved learning about people.
Wally was infinitely kind and thoughtful to his family; as well as his friends throughout the years. He would drop everything to deliver food if you were sick or take you somewhere. He loved bringing his grandchildren “Fribbles” from Friendly’s, and Christmas dinners at the Milleridge Inn for 50 years. Wally always attended all sporting events for his sons and grandchildren. He would also attend concerts for his daughter.
Wally was a huge fan of West Point. He loved attending the annual West Point/Navy game with his children. He was an avid fan of the Jets and any football.
We will always have Wally/Poppi in our thoughts and prayers. We are comforted he is at peace sharing stories with the angels. In lieu of flowers, we ask that individuals make a donation to Hospice Care.
Wake services will be held on Monday, April 3rd from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at O.B Davis Funeral Homes in Port Jefferson Station, NY. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, April 4th at 10 a.m. at Saint Gerard Majella Roman Catholic Church in Port Jefferson Station, NY.
