Port Lavaca – Deacon Al Calzada, 82, of Port Lavaca passed away September 2, 2015. He was born September 30, 1932 in Port Lavaca to the late Cipriano Calzada Sr. and Aurora Farias Calzada. He attended school and graduated in 1951 from Port Lavaca High School. Alonzo began working at Alcoa in July 1951. He was promoted to supervisor in the Digestion Department in1972. He retired in April 1987 after 35 ½ years working for Alcoa. Alonzo served in the Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955. He also attended the University of St. Thomas at Houston for 4 ½ years and was ordained by Bishop David Fellhauer on November 19, 1994. He became the first permanent deacon at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. Deacon Al was chosen as the Hispanic Ministry liaison for the Diocese of Victoria. In 1993, he was asked to go assist the Diocese of Little Rock, AR with the Hispanic Community. He ministered as Director of Hispanic Ministry in several parishes there for almost 4 years. He completed his assignment in October 2003 and returned home. On Nov. 23, 2014, he received the key to the city of Port Lavaca by Mayor Jack Whitlow and Nov. 19th is declared “Deacon Al Calzada Day.”
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Dora Calzada; children, Victor O. Calzada (Lucy), Alonzo O. Calzada Jr. (Aaron) of San Antonio, Cindy Sandoval (Alfred), Flora Windham (Chris), Rita Saenz (Ray) of Saudi Arabia, Pam Villafuerte and Hope Boyle (Matthew) of Victoria; sisters, Angelina Calzada, Amelia Silvas, Angelica Partida, Janie Calzada, Mary Ann Balboa, Martina Flores; brothers, Gabriel Calzada, Joe Calzada, Cipriano Calzada Jr., Antonio Calzada; grandchildren, Kristy Moreno (Michael), Derek Anderson (Miraina), Paige Villafuerte, Sarah Anderson (Stevie), Joshua Calzada, Gabrielle Anderson and great-grandchildren, Charlotte Moreno, Sophia Anderson and Liam Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held Sunday, September 6, 2015 from 2-4 p.m. at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited Monday, September 7, 2015 at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church with Father Tommy Chen officiating. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church with Bishop David Fellhauer officiating. Interment will follow in Port Lavaca Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of the Calhoun County Veterans Joint Honor Guard.
Pallbearers are sons-in-law and grandsons, Ray A. Saenz, Alfred Sandoval, Aaron Ayala, Chris Windham, Matthew Boyle, Michael Moreno, Derek Anderson and Joshua Calzada.
Honorary Pallbearers are Carlos and Lupe Montelongo of Bay City, Voces de Cristo, Santiago Degollado, Jose and Teri Hernandez of Springdale, AR, Jose and Luz Galvan of Texarkana, AR, Gene Menchaca, Luis Bonuz, Eddie Cordova, Javier Martinez, Porfirio Hernandez and Abel Landeros.
