

She was born October 31, 1918 in Port Lavaca, Texas to Thomas Marion Tanner and Minnie Dunks Tanner. She married King Fisher, August 13, 1937 in Port Lavaca. They were married 67 years.
She is survived by Daughters, Ann Boyd and husband, Waymon of Port Lavaca and Linda LaQuay and husband, Timothy of Port Lavaca. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Wayne Boyd and wife, Tammie, Randy Boyd and wife, Debbie and Amy LaQuay and fiancé, Greg Flam all of Port Lavaca. Six great-grandchildren, Ruby, Chris, Hillary, Jonathon, Jeremy and Katie Jo Boyd, and great-great-grandson, Wyatt Curtis; one sister, Tommie Mae Hicks and husband, Charles of Houston; niece, Sherry Strunk and family of Houston and nephew, Bill Hicks of Houston, and devoted assistant, Darlette Koliba.
She is preceded in death by her beloved King and grandson, Jason LaQuay.
Jewel graduated from Port Lavaca High School in 1935, and from Texas Lutheran College in Seguin in 1937.
Jewel and King Fisher founded King Fisher Marine Service, Inc. in 1940 at Port Lavaca, Texas. With her help, the Company grew to be the largest home based family owned dredging business in Texas when it was sold in 1998. She served as the Secretary-Treasurer of King Fisher Marine Service from 1940 until 1982, and on the Board of Directors from 1940 until 1998. She joined the First Baptist Church in Port Lavaca in 1929, and was its oldest continuous member. She was a licensed airplane pilot, and a member of the 99’s, an International Organization of Women Pilots. She served on the Board of Trustees of the Memorial Medical Center for 8 years, serving as the President of the Board for two terms. She was a member of the Guadalupe-Victoria Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Vice-Regent from 1984-1986, and as Regent from 1986 to 1988. She was also a Member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She served on the Board of Trustees of the Crisis Hotline of Calhoun County from 1985 to 1992, she was a published poet and a talented artist. Her biography has been published in “Who’s Who of American Women” every year since 1978. Her hobbies were writing, art, playing the piano and organ, watching wildlife and traveling.
The family wants to give special thanks to her devoted care givers Janie Phillips and Vivian Clay.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. in Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 10 a.m. in Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home with Pastor’s Mike Gresham and David Bush officiating. Interment will follow in Port Lavaca Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Wayne, Randy, Chris, Jonathon and Jeremy Boyd and Greg Flam.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Calhoun County EMS or the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
