Daddy, Even though a year has passed us by, there is never a day that goes by that I don't have you in my heart and on my mind. I miss you so very much! Morgan,Corbin & Joe also think & talk about you all the time. Keep sending us ladybugs. That brings peace to our hearts and smiles on our faces. We will always LOVE YOU!!

1935-
On July 17, 1935, a saint was born.  My Grandfather came into my life on January 11, 1978, and left at 5 o'clock on March 20, 2014.  When I was born my Grandfather was 42 years young.  I got to spend 36 very grateful years with a man who was more than a Grandfather to me.  He played many roles in my life.  Some I have memories that come to the forefront of my mind and some I was too young to recall in conversation, but the memories and love are in my heart.  For a short while, he was like a father to me while I was young and The Lord was in search of a father for me and a husband for my Mom.  My Grandfather was a very strong and tall man and intimidating to some.  I remember the stories my Dad Douglas and Uncle David would tell about the first time they met my Grandfather and how he towered over them and his hands were so large.  I'm glad he gave my mom's hand to a man who had the same loyal morals as him.  See my Grandfather was always a gentle giant in my eyes.  Every summer I would come to spend time with my Grandparents.  I remember him coming home from work taking a shower sitting down at his place at the table and doing his paperwork for work I would wait patiently helping my Grandmother with the dishes in the kitchen.  Just waiting to sit on his lap so he could tell me stories!  These memories could go on and on.  My Grandfather taught me to work hard for my family cause no one was going to do it for me.  He taught me to be quiet in a boat when you fish …and my Grandmother would remind me as I sat there trying hard to be quiet…That we can live off the land if our rows are done right the first time and all straight.  He was always a bright smile and a kiss and a Hello Dee Dee!  How are you?  Did you get a garden in yet?  And would want to hear all about it with a smile from ear to ear.  He wasn't one to be about himself... he was always concerned about everyone else first.  Our Grandfather slowly lost most of his hearing and mostly depended on the voice of my Grandmother and his other senses.  Grandfather was a very intelligent man.  He was always very stern when needed but full of love.  Our Grandfather knew when cancer came into his life we the ones he loved and cherished weren't ready for him to go on.  So he chose a fight against cancer.  He fought for us!!! He fought a long, hard year and nine months.  Our grandfather's heart was strong even though his body grew weak but through all that, his senses stayed strong.  He could tell that cancer wasn't just infecting his body.  It was spreading to ours.  He could see the pain in our eyes when we saw it eating him alive.  And for us, he made another choice. For us, he choose to fight the cancer and kill it in another way.  The way a soldier does when he knows he's going to fight a war that he's not coming back from.  As hard as it was for him to say goodbye, He stayed strong for us.  He laid down his life for ours to stop the heartache and pain the trips to MD Anderson and back were causing.  He said no more hurting my family.  You can have me but not them! My Grandfather was an angel in our lives.  He was a man that taught us all to sit together at a table and have dinner.  To sit outside and enjoy the blue skies, the birds, and the beauty of helping people.  He took simple things like watermelons and large zinnias and turned them into things to cherish by and hold onto.  This strong man that we all love lived his life like everyone should.  Love your family and friends and life to the fullest till the curtains close on your play.  We are sad to see Act 1 done and this intermission is hard on all of us…but Pawpaw we will applaud you for a story we can carry forward because of you… This is Act 2 Pawpaw!  Thank you for creating a strong enough family story in us that we can keep it going for you!  Love You Pawpaw and we look forward to seeing you soon! Love you!!!

I remember many of good times with paw paw.  I was always waiting to hit my growth spur and grow up to be that 6 foot man with intimidating stature.  I am 28 now and a couple of feet shorter but live with the same mind set, morals, and values.  He was the type of man when he would speak everybody would listen.  As a kid I would watch him drink pearl light out of a 12 ounce can and his hands would be as big as a bears paw wrapping all the way around it.  He could always be found in the back yard tending to the garden, inventing something new, or working on something in his shop.  He had a passion for mechanical motors and getting them running to perfection.  There was a many of days where both grandma, and grandpa and I would sit under the oak tree on a hot summer day, drink sweet tea and talk about the good old days.  They would both tell me stories of how they grew up and how the times have changed so much.  I know times will continue to change and we will have to adapt to them, but we are going to miss you and you're wonderful stories.  Your actions will live on through the many people you have influenced and continue to be passed on through future generations.

Shawn Gray:
My memory of paw paw is when I was a little girl and he taught me how to dance.  My favorite dance with him was the waltz.  He taught me how to run a trout line and catch catfish.  I loved waking up in the morning with him and setting the lines then coming back in the evenings to see what we had caught.

Mckenzie Zwerschke:
In second grade I rode the bus home to grandmas and paw paw's house everyday.  When I got there, paw paw was always in his shop working on something.  I would always go talk to him and I would always smash all the aluminum cans he had.

Grandpaw always loved my pickles that I made for the livestock show a couple of years ago. They are bread and butter pickles called confetti pickle party and he loved to share them!

I loved swimming with my Paw-Paw and loved him very, very much!

Morgan & Corbin Gray:
Paw Paw would always come over to our house and fish with us, swim in the pool, and play with us at the bay front in Seadrift, Texas.

From the day I was born to the death of Pa-Pa I loved him so much everything in my life with him was perfect so I don't have just one single memory but I do have one big memory and that was when everyday he was with me.
