Skip was born May 27, 1948, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of Clement Francis Diegel Sr. & Viola Rose (Vivian) Diegel who preceded in him in death.
He has always had a love for music, both classical and oldies. At the age of 14 years, Skip found his calling and began to DJ for local parties and dances in the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area. By the time he was 16, he got a part time job working at a local radio station in Ann Arbor, MI.
After graduating from St. John Catholic High School in Ypsilanti, MI, Class of ‘67, Skip went on to pursue his love for radio/advertising. He attended Cleary College for a brief time, and then enrolled in the Electronic Institute of Technology in Detroit, MI, where he obtained his broadcasting degree. From there, he started Diegel advertising and then began working as a radio announcer at WAAM radio in Ypsilanti, MI. While working with various radio stations in Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio in 1999, Skip moved to The Villages in Florida to work with WVLG.
Skip’s life goal was to own his own radio station. In 2008, the opportunity arose in New Smyrna Beach, FL and he purchased WSBB radio AM 1230, “clearly the great voice of Volusia County.” When Skip wasn’t on the air, at the radio station or with clients, he was either on the tennis court, playing golf, walking the beach or watching Notre Dame football. He was very active in every community he was in, and with the catholic churches. He always loved visits from his children and grandchild.
Surviving family members include son Todd (Kim) Diegel of Des Plaines, IL, daughter Laura (Carl) Warner and one grandson, Jason Warner of Ypsilanti, MI; sister Elizabeth Ann (Mike) Ebel of Cape Coral, FL; niece and nephews; David (Debbie) Lengel of Lake Orion, MI, Bonnie Hodge of Bridgman, MI, Mike Lengel of Cape Coral, FL, and Scott (Sharmen) Lengel of Waterford, MI; along with several great nephews and a niece.
The family would like to give thanks to all the family and friends who have supported Skip, especially throughout this last year, especially to Ammie Ryan (Ransom) of WSBB radio, Rose Traub of Assisted Living Made Simple LLC, and the wonderful staff at Indigo Palms Assisted Living & Memory Care in Daytona Beach, FL.
In lieu of flowers, you may donate to Indigo Palms Assisted Living and Memory care facility in Daytona Beach, FL. A Celebration of Skip’s Life will be held on Tuesday, January 30, from 12 noon to 2 p.m., at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home – Port Orange, 4815 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Port Orange FL 32129.
