Paul S. McCarthy

Paul S. McCarthy, 82, passed away the afternoon of April 12, 2018. A true native of Daytona Beach, Paul watched the area grow and develop into the community he so loved. Retiring from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years of active service, the Master Sergeant transitioned into civilian life with his wife, Ashraf, as a criminal and internal affairs investigator as well as training officer for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. During that time, he attended Rollins College, earning a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration in 1979, and taught Criminal Law at the collegiate level both locally and in Panama City. Paul spent 15 years serving the Daytona Beach area in his capacity as an investigator and officer, in addition to range master and driving instructor for the force before retiring once more, to enjoy his passions – hunting in the Ocala National Forest, fishing almost anywhere, and his family. His devotion to public service and his community led him to return to the sheriff’s office, withdrawing from retirement, to act as a bailiff in the juvenile court system – a position he enjoyed for 10 more years before electing to follow a higher calling – that of an amazing grandfather. Retiring for the final time, Paul cherished the time spent with his family, especially his five grandchildren. Teaching them, as he had his own children, about the beauty found in the outdoors, the best back roads for hunting and fishing, as well as how to “properly” pack a camper so as to be ready to go adventuring at any free moment, Paul also captured many of the joys of his life in the multitude of photos he would take. Paul is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ashraf; son, Sean McCarthy; daughter, Cherene (Justin) Sipe; and five beloved grandchildren: Zachary, Jayden, Zayna, Zoey, and Leyla.A Memorial Service celebrating Paul’s life will be held Friday April 20, 2018 at 2pm, in the chapel of Shannon Maloney Funeral Home, 4084 Halifax Drive, Port Orange. Military honors will be rendered.
