Ray, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, was born on August 6, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland. At the age of 17, he entered the United States Navy and served his country in World War II aboard the USS Saranac. On March 10, 1951, he married his love Marjorie Ellen Miller and they had one daughter, Susan Ann. Ray worked for the United States Postal Service in Daytona Beach for 39 years. After his retirement, he worked for Scotty’s Hardware in Port Orange. Ray was very devoted to all the dedicated customers who knew him by name.
Ray never met a stranger. He was a kind-hearted, gentle soul who loved all people. He was known for his infectious smile and genuine love of those around him. His corny sense of humor and random knowledge of most everything always kept everyone entertained. He enjoyed deep-sea fishing with his grandson and son-in-law. He also had a passion for wood working, building model trains and planes, as well as photography. Ray was known as “Papa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family was his whole world. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Port Orange where he served as a greeter for the past nine years.
A special thank you to the entire staff at Country Side Lakes, especially Linda for always going above and beyond to make Ray feel special. Also to the entire staff at Smyrna West ALF, especially Beth and Teresa for treating him as their own “Papa.” Their extra love and kindness ensured comfort in his final days.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Margie. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Ann Grubbs, son-in-law Tad Grubbs; grandson, David Grubbs; granddaughter-in-law, Lisa Grubbs; granddaughter, Erin Martin, and great granddaughters: Taylor Grubbs, Allyson Grubbs, Sydney Martin, Millie Martin, and Lucy Kate Martin.
