

Walter J. Sauer, age 94, passed away February 6, 2015 at Florida Hospital Medical Center, Daytona Beach, FL. Walt was born January 29, 1921 in Huntington Station, NY. He attended Central High School in South Huntington, where he earned his Varsity letter, playing catcher for his School baseball team. In July of 1940, Walt enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and served at various bases including Locbourne Field, Ohio and Mitchell Field, New York attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. In 1943 he was deployed to Kings Cliffe Great Britain where he served with the 20th Fighter Group. In July 1945 Walt returned to the US where he received his discharge on July 5, 1945. In September 1941 Walt married his high school sweetheart, Marian Brown. The remained happily married for 69 years until Marian’s passing in 2011. Walt was employed by the Long Island Lighting Company for 34 years; retiring in 1979 as an Area Supervisor. Retirement brought a move to Nettles Island in Jensen Beach, FL. beginning a new phase of life, including traveling in their motor home visiting family and friends across the country and where Walt became a member of the park security unit and served 21 years. He leaves behind three children, Walter (Susan) Sauer of Port Orange, FL, Bette Jane (David) Preuss of Eyota, MN and Bonnie Lee (Jack) Tiernan of Greenlawn, NY, seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Besides his wife and parents he is predeceased by two brothers. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday 1:00 PM at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd Port Orange Fl.
