Raised in Milton, Massachusetts, Hank was a devoted older brother to his three younger siblings. His strong work ethic was evident early in life - at just eight years old he was setting up pins at a local bowling alley. A lifelong and passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox, Celtics & Bruins, Hank fondly recalled his Dad taking him to Fenway Park (with his brother John) felt like ‘dying and going to heaven!’ - especially on the rare and glorious occasions the Red Sox beat the Yankees.
Hank attended Boston College High School and the United States Military Academy at West Point. He arrived in 1956 wearing a pair of brown shoes that his dad spray painted black – a humble detail he’d recount with humor. Though West Point was demanding, he often said four years under the Jesuits at B.C. High prepared him well!
In October ‘59, a fellow cadet enlisted Hank on a blind double-date to the inaugural Army–Air Force football game at Yankee Stadium. There he met Carole Kozloski, a sophomore at Ladycliff College - the love of his life. They were married in 1962 and went on to share 63 devoted years together building a life centered on faith, family, and service. Together they raised four children, who were Hank’s greatest pride and joy.
Hank was both an Army Aviator and an Airborne Ranger, flying fixed-wing aircraft & helicopters. He served three consecutive hardship tours – one in Iran and two in Vietnam. Though those years brought sacrifice and the loss of close friends, there were moments to cherish including flying Bob Hope around Vietnam in his Huey during a USO Tour.
Over the course of a distinguished 24-year career, Hank retired from the Army as a full Colonel in 1984, a decorated veteran whose awards & commendations reflected a lifetime of service including the Bronze Star, Army Meritorious Unit Commendation, Legion of Merit and Master Aviator, among others. He went on to a successful second career with Northrop. He maintained strong friendships over the years and, with his West Point classmates, helped organize annual reunions/golf tournaments for his “Go Like 60!” class.
In 2000, Hank & Carole retired to Port St. Lucie. Their home on a golf course - overlooking a pool, double fairways and the hole #2 green was their “Camelot” for family and friends to gather. An accomplished golfer, Hank won his 3rd Club Championship at PGA Golf Club in 2002. Yet his greatest victories were always personal. He and Carole went on to host 20+ consecutive New Year’s Eve gatherings with their growing family and entertain a revolving door of friends, golf buddies & parish priests. A man of deep faith, Hank was an active parishioner and volunteer at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church, The Salvation Army and a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus.
Hank is survived by his beloved wife, Carole; his children: Jim (Grace) of Woodbridge, VA; Susan (Rick) of NY, NY; Dave (Melissa) of Carrboro, NC; and Dan (Christine) of San Jose, CA; and his grandchildren: Alexis (Hunter), Kate, Caroline, Rosie, Cameron, Joe & Avery and two great grandchildren, Sophia & Christian. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary and Joan. He was preceded in death by his brother, John.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am followed by an 11:00 am funeral mass on Friday, March 27, 2028, at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church, 350 NW California Boulevard, Port St. Lucie, FL. A reception will follow at the church immediately after mass.
Interment at Arlington National Cemetery is expected to take place in September (date TBD).
