She was born in Portland on December 15, 1920, the daughter of George A. and Rose (Phillips) MacMillan. She attended Portland Schools. After high school she moved to Berkeley, California, where during WWll she became a true “Rosie the Riveter, “doing military defense work at a local shipyard. Upon returning to Maine in 1946, she met and married her husband, Clarence l. Ross of Long Island, Maine. They resided on Long Island for over 44years, until his death in 1990. Kay truly enjoyed being part of “her” Island Community, and was a member of the Evergreen Methodist Church, Long Island Association, Long Island Historical Society, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Kay retired after 20 years with the Portland Public School Department, as a food service worker. For several years after her retirement, she enjoyed working at the Westbrook College in the same capacity.
Kay was predeceased by her husband, Clarence l. Ross; her parents, George and Rose MacMillan; her siblings, Robert, Albert, Kenneth, Thomas, Myrtle, and Ruby. She is survived by her daughter,
Cathie Ross Johnson and her husband Jack, of Melbourne, FL.; her son Thomas L. Ross of Portland, ME, ; three grandchildren, Robert Pirone, and his wife Marcia, and Matthew and Alison Johnson; great grandchildren, Emily and Oliver Pirone; a brother Roland MacMillan; and three sisters, Margaret(Peggy) Brown, Jean Shea, and Helen (Dunnie) Conley; several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at St. Joseph’s, especially the crew on unit B. Their kindness and compassion have been one of our greatest blessings. We would also like to say a special thank you to her sister Dunnie and their entire Conly family, and niece Marianne Ross Kane for the boundless love, care, and support they have provide over the past few years.
Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28th, and a funeral service will be held at 11a.m. on
Wednesday, June 29th, at Jones, Rich, & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland, ME.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Catherine’s memory to the Evergreen Methodist Church,
