Falmouth, ME - Constance Barker Kent died on August 17, 2024 in Portland following a short illness. She was born in Portland on June 25, 1927, the daughter of John Clement and Elsie Linde Barker. Connie attended local schools and graduated from Deering High School in the class of 1945. She grew up enjoying summers at the family camp on Sebago Lake along with her younger brother John.
Connie attended Wellesley College and graduated in 1949 with a B.A. in chemistry. She began her career at the Fearing Research Laboratory, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. There, she met her husband, Stanley Kent, a medical student.
Connie returned to Portland when Stan started his private practice. They soon moved to Falmouth, where they both lived for the rest of their lives. Upon returning to the Portland area, Connie joined the Board of Directors of the Maine Home for Boys, a residence for children of broken families. She would become president of the Maine Home Board of Directors which eventually merged with Sweetser, a community mental health provider. She continued as a member of that Board, served on many committees, and, ultimately became its president. She became a corporator for Sweetser for the rest of her life.
Connie also managed her husband’s business payroll and bookkeeping, and that of his partners. She later worked for a CPA doing income tax work.
Following her husband's retirement, Connie and Stan enjoyed travel to many foreign countries, as well as extensively in the U.S., focusing on natural history oriented travel. She was an ardent birder, and developed an extensive world list as a result of their numerous trips. She enjoyed needlework, gardening, and was a voracious reader.
Connie was predeceased by her husband, Stanley, and her daughter Susan Winslow. Connie is survived by her sons, Thomas Kent and his wife Susan of Topsham ME, and John Kent of Selkirk NY; her son-in-law Raimond Winslow; sister-in-law Roberta Barker; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a niece and several nephews and grandnephews.
