

CAPE ELIZABETH — E. Philip Harley, 87, died peacefully on May 3, 2010, at his home.
He was born in Allendale, S.C., March 14, 1923, the son of Lawrence and Maddie Lake Shepard Harley. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. in 1942, training at Quantico, Va. In 1944, he went to Camp Elliott and than on to Camp Pendelton both located in San Diego, Calif. He was sent to Guadal Canal to form the 6th Marine Division where on April 1, 1944 , the 6th Marine Division landed in Okinawa, Japan. In 1945 he was sent to China returning back to San Diego in 1946 and was honorably discharged in 1946 at Great Lakes, Chicago, Ill.
Mr. Harley met the former Jane Kelly in December of 1942 and they were later married on Aug. 14, 1943. They moved to Cape Elizabeth in 1961. He joined New England Telephone Co. in 1946, retiring in 1983.
In 1948, he was raised to the sublime degree of a master mason, later becoming a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Portland. Mr. Harley became a member of Kora Temple Shrine Legion of Honor in 1975 where he became a 1st Lieutenant. In 1996 he earned the position of 1st Lieutenant Colonel of Kora Temple.
Mr. Harley was a member of the Cape Elizabeth Lions Club, the Portland Lodge of Elks and a communicant of St. Alban's Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry and had been assistant treasurer. His passions included hunting, fishing, the New York Yankees and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of Cape Elizabeth; one son, Philip W. Harley of Hattiesburg, Miss., two daughters, Elizabeth H. Potente and her husband Joseph of Stafford, Va., and Sally A. Leavitt and her husband John of Saco; five grandchildren, Tara Hagge, Camron, Harley, Carissa Potente, Dylan Potente, Hannah Leavitt; and two great-grandchildren, Izabelle Hagge and Bryce Harley.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, on Friday from 4-7 p.m., where a Masonic ritualistic service will be held at 6:30 p.m. A burial office will be celebrated on Saturday at 11 a.m. from St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 885 Shore Rd., Cape Elizabeth.
