

Eleanor G. Potter, 89, died Saturday at her residence. She was born in So. Portland, August 6, 1925 a daughter of the late Sidney F. and Evelyn Newton Doughty. She graduated from Jackman High School and the University of So. Maine receiving a B.S. degree. She married Newell Potter, December 29, 1963. She worked for IBM for 40 years and was affiliated with her husband, the owner of Warren Furniture stores, owning stores in Westbrook and Biddeford.
Eleanor had been a Toastmistress of the Portland Toastmasters , past president of the Glass Club of Portland, member of the Order of Eastern Star, an active member of the Portland Museum of Art and formerly active in local and civic organizations. She and her husband enjoyed many trips to the Orient and other trips with their best friends, Morris and Sylvia Greenburg. A highlight of one her trips was climbing the stairs of Macho Piccho in Peru. Eleanor was an avid collector of art and antiques and had served on the board of the Victoria Mansion Society.
Her husband, Newell Potter died in 2004. She is survived by a sister, Barbara Coleman of Portland, her husband’s grandchildren, Victoria Lynch and her husband Thomas of San Marcos, Ca., Helene Levy of Rangeley and Leonard Levy and his partner, Freddie Caldwell of Punta Gorda, Fl., 1 cousin, Ellen Burger and her husband Albert of Crawfordville, Fl. her friend and caregiver, Annemarie Germain of Portland and her cat, Momo and dog, Preston. She was predeceased by a brother, William Doughty.
A funeral will be held on Thursday, March 26 at 11 am from Temple Beth El, 400 Deering Ave., Portland. Burial will follow in Temple Beth El Memorial Park.
