Liz was born in Rochester, NY, but grew up in the nearby, small town Fairport, attending a one room schoolhouse until High School. After school she worked for Kodak and then traveled to 48 states with her father.
A very caring and giving woman, Liz drove a bus for disabled children for many years. She became a CNA, and in the early 80’s she moved to Portland to take care of her mother-in-law who became ill. Liz worked at the Barron Center and other local nursing homes. She also worked as an in-house caregiver for several people over the years.
Liz was a longtime member of the Stevens Ave. Congregational Church. She was a member of the Ladies Guild at church, and an active member of the congregation. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and traveling; including a visit to Hawaii with her husband to make 49 states. Liz was intelligent, well read and had a wonderful unexpected dry wit. She was beloved by many, and will be missed by all.
Predeceasing Liz was her husband of 51 years Robert M. Elder Sr. and four siblings. Surviving are two daughters; Merry Elder of Brattleboro, VT; Heidi Piper, her husband David, and three grandchildren, Aaron, Ariel and Andy of Colorado Springs, CO; and a son Robert M. Elder Jr. of Portland.
A period of visitation for Liz will be held this Wednesday, October 16 from 4 to 7 PM at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland, ME. A 10:00 AM funeral service for Liz will be held on Thursday, October 17 at the Stevens Ave. Congregational Church, 790 Stevens Ave. Portland, ME.
In lieu of flowers the Elder family suggests memorials be made to the Stevens Ave. Congregational Church, 790 Stevens Ave. Portland, ME 04103.
