

Auburn – Esther L. Smith 88 passed away Friday November 11, 2011. She was born March 28, 1923 in Portland, daughter of the late Leon E. and Freda Grant Strout. Before moving to Auburn she lived in Portland for over 80 years.
Esther was a 1941 graduate of Portland High School, worked at JJ Nissans and retired from Porteous, Mitchell and Braun.
She was a 50 year member of Ivy Rebekah Lodge #5, 50 year member of Mizpah Chapter #3 O.E.S., Past Rebekah Assembly Marshal and Chaplain of the Assembly, Past President of the L.A.P.M. and a member of the Ladies Encampment of the Odd Fellows and Rebekhs of Maine. Esther also taught Sunday school at the defunct St. Lawrence Church.
Ester is predeceased by her husband Madson R. Smith.
She is survived by her six children; Jeanette Avenall and her husband John, Barbara Rand and her husband Wilbur, Madson Smith, Jr., Charles Smith and his wife Linda, Timothy Smith and his wife Elizabeth and Deborah Smith, ten brothers and sisters; E. Hartley, Vera, Beatrice, Leon, Carol, Ralph, Judy, Nancy, Linda and Denny, 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation Thursday November 17, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral 199 Woodford St. Portland. A Rebekah Service will be held at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Interment will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park Portland.
