Portland – Everett A. (Bob) Mathews passed away on Wednesday, February 16th 2011 at Maine Medical Center. He was born in Portland, on November 30, 1932 to the late Margaret Trefrey and Everett Mathews.
Bob attended Portland Schools and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1950. He served his country in the Korean War. He was recognized with the Korean Service Medal with one star and the United Nations Ribbon.
During a snow storm on New Year’s Day, January 1, 1954 he married Margaret D. Taliento at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church. Together, they raised three children in their home in Portland. Bob managed Botto’s Bakery for 25 years before purchasing the Bakery in 1982. Through the years, the Bakery became a regular stopping ground for family and friends who looked forward to his infectious smile, upbeat attitude, deep laugh and friendly conversation. He was very fortunate to have his two sons working beside him on a daily basis and eventually take over the operations of the bakery. Even after his so-called “retirement”, Bob continued to open the shop out front and looked forward to greeting his “regulars”.
Bob’s love for his entire family was openly displayed on all occasions. He loved getting together at the family camp on Little Sebago, enjoyed winter vacations at their condo in Spring Hill, Florida and trips to Italy and Ireland. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and his love for them will continue to inspire and comfort them.
