

Falmouth– Grace Smith Pothier Fisher, 95, of Gray, passed away peacefully January 2, 2011 at Birchwood. She was born, July 21, 1915 in Jonesport, Maine the daughter of the late Alvin and Nellie (Hartford) Smith.
Mrs. Fisher graduated as Valedictorian from Jonesport High School in 1932 and the Maine School of Commerce in Bangor, in 1933. She was employed 30 years by the State of Maine. First, she was employed in the accounting department, in Augusta. She worked for many years at the Division of Veterans Affairs in Portland, as Secretary and then as Office Manager, of the Clerical Division Department of Health and Welfare in Portland and retired in 1970. She was awarded a citation with recognition for meritorious service in behalf of her service to the state and to the department of Health and Welfare. During World War II she was supervisor of civilian payrolls for four years, at the Brunswick Naval Air Station. She received a certificate of recognition of service, awarded to civilian employees of the Navy, who remained on essential wartime work, until their services could be spared or end of hostilities. It was granted in recognition of that service to the Navy and to the country. She was well liked by her coworkers and associates.
Mrs. Fisher was a longtime member of the Maine State Employees Association, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 2 Fitzgerald-Cummings Post, Augusta; Auxiliary member to the sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Waterville, in 1964, she donated a 1868 Baxter Steam Boiler to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. listed in their records as a gift under the name of Pothier. Mrs. Fisher was previously married to Arthur C. Pothier, he passed away in 1964. She later married Howard E. Fisher, he passed away in 1994.
Mrs. Fisher enjoyed traveling and after her retirement spent the winters in Florida and South Carolina and summers in Maine.
She was predeceased by her husbands, her parents, and two sisters, Margery Fernald Benton and Janetta Higgins Thorndike; brothers, Alvin Smith and Reginald Smith.
She is survived by nieces, Karleen Proctor of Benton, ME., Nancy Munson of Corinth, ME, Lori Martin of Jonesport, ME, Linda Autio of Bremen, ME.; nephew, Richard Smith of Walpole, ME. and her dear friends John and Deborah Walker.
A Graveside Service will be 2 pm, Thursday, January 6, 2011 in Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St.
