

Born in Topeka, Kansas on April 3, 1919, Helen was the third of seven children born to the late Thomas and Ruth Forbes. Helen attended Kansas University in 1937-1939, moved to Maine upon her marriage to Kenneth Conrad Schade in 1942, and after several years in New Hampshire, she and Ken returned with their children to his hometown in 1959. Helen excelled at Contract Bridge, and became a Life Master. She was a loyal Jayhawk fan, and also a fervent Red Sox fan. She and Ken enjoyed traveling, including one memorable trip to Europe, and shared many happy family reunions. She was a long time active member and volunteer of the First Lutheran Church, and always gave so generously and freely of her time to care for those in need. Helen was a most gracious, gentle and caring soul, who loved her family and Christ the Lord above all else.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ken of 67 years, her sister Marie Trigg and her husband Thomas, sister Dorothy Forbes, sister Betty Ratliff and her husband Bud, and a brother George Forbes. Helen will always be remembered by her daughter Barbara Page and her fiancé Ed Phillips of Moody, daughter Nancy Clinton and her husband DeWitt of Wells, daughter Kathleen Salamone of Springvale, and son Thomas Schade of San Diego; her sister Carol Forbes Olander and brother-in-law Jim of Wichita, Kansas, her 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, her sister-in-law Jeremy Hoffman Forbes of La Jolla, CA; together with many nieces and nephews, and countless friends who were blessed to know her.
Family and friends are invited to attend a reception at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25th at the First Lutheran Church, 132 Auburn Street, Portland. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery on Stevens Avenue, Portland. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich, and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland.
Her family extends special appreciation for the loving and caring staff at St. Andre’ Health Care, Sol Amor Hospice, as well as Huntington Common in Kennebunk, and the Park Danforth in Portland, where she previously resided.
