She was born January 19, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY, a daughter of Dr. Isaac Nelson and Amy (Weldon) Nelson. She grew up in Brooklyn and upon graduating High School in 1956, enrolled in the University of Maine at Orono. She graduated with a degree in Home Economics in 1960 and moved to Milo, Maine. She became a Home Economics teacher at Brownville Junction High School in the fall of 1960. Milo is also where she met the love of her life, Philip Gerow, whom she married in 1962.
Ina Jane and Philip began their family in 1967 with the adoption of their first daughter, Amy. They adopted their daughter Meg in 1970. Daughter Beth arrived in 1975.
Ina Jane devoted herself to raising her “Little Women” full time. As they grew, she became a substitute teacher in MSAD 41. She also taught Sewing and Microwave Cooking classes in the area’s Adult Ed program for many years.
She enjoyed sewing many outfits for her girls as they grew, and making some distinctive neckties for Philip to wear while teaching. She also became an avid quilter for several years.
Perhaps her most cherished role was that of Ga to her 3 grandchildren, Giavanna, Sophia, and Garrett. She loved doting on them as they grew, and there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for them.
She was predeceased by her parents, Isaac and Amy, and by her husband Philip.
Ina Jane is survived by her three daughters, Amy Gerow and her husband Queena Lo of Lewiston, Meg Nisbet and her husband Greg of Portland, and Beth Gerow of South Portland. She will also be dearly missed by her grandchildren Giavanna Loose and her partner Luke Mason of South Portland, Sophia Cardone and her wife Chanel, and daughter Amelia of Biddeford and Garrett Nisbet of Portland. She is also survived by her Brother Craig Nelson and his wife Cherri, of Farmingdale, ME, and many nieces, nephews and loving family and friends.
A private service for family will take place soon. Ina Jane will be buried with her husband in Greenville, ME in the summer.
