Portland, Maine. Jane Perry Lindquist, 96, passed into the arms of her creator on November 19, 2025 after a full day of visits from her neighbors at The Birchwoods at Canco, family and friends from around Maine.
Born May 12, in Rockland, Maine to Raymond and Natalie Perry, she grew up on Masonic Street with her two younger sisters Sandra and Evelyn and attended the Lincoln Street School graduating in the class of 1947. She was a polio survivor and maintained an active life without complaint in spite of her physical challenges. While attending Colby College (class of ’51) she met Robert Albion Lindquist whose parents had moved to Rockland where his father managed the Woolworths store while Bob attended MIT.
Bob and Jane married in the summer of 1951 and the newlyweds spent their first years in Bridgeport, Connecticut where their first son Eric was born and Bob worked for Alcoa Corp. In 1956 they returned to Maine, settled in Cape Elizabeth first on Farm Hill Road, where they lived when son Peter and daughter Karen were born, then in the 1960’s to Ramble Road, where the Lindquist family lived as the three children were raised. The family attended State Street Congregational Church where Jane sang in the choir and taught Sunday school.
In 1967, Jane volunteered as a member of the Building Committee after the town of Cape Elisabeth voted to build a new high school, which opened in January 1971. In the mid 70’s, Jane earned a master’s degree in special education attending Leslie College and University of Maine while working in the Cape Elizabeth school department, grades 6-8, helping kids with special needs.
Many happy memories were made during family vacations at Pine Point and Sebago Lake or “the Farm” in South Hope, and she always joined the family on ski trips as an enthusiastic supporter and caterer, preparing lunches and snacks for Bob and the kids while she stayed warm in the lodge at places like Saddleback, Mt. Abrams, Sugarloaf and even Zermatt in 1999. She also joined Bob aboard the ‘Bout Time, a 19’ Oday Mariner sailboat in Casco Bay as first mate and member of Centerboard Yacht Club
In 1980, after all the kids flew the coup, Bob and Jane moved to Beverly, MA where they established and grew new roots and many relationships. Grandkids loved visiting Pop and Grammy Jane, and there were many fun outings had around the north shore and Boston area.
After retirement in the 90’s, She and Bob returned to Maine, and were quickly transplanted to familiar ground, spending time with their family, especially the grandkids and eventual great grands. They were deeply involved in the John Libby Family Association when they helped to compile, publish and distribute its two-volume history from the basement of their home on Beech Ridge Road in Scarborough. Jane was active in local community, especially the Scarborough Public Library, rejoined the State Street choir and became active with the women’s group where she supported many Church initiatives to grow and provide for the local needs in the area.
After moving to Ocean View in Falmouth in 2002, she became involved in the local post-polio support group. She and Bob made many good friends during 20 years at Ocean View.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and sisters. She is survived by her sons Eric and Peter, and daughter Karen, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family is grateful for all her friends and family that visited, for Bryan and all the friends at State Street Church, and the special care she received at The Birchwoods at Canco, and staff of Beacon Hospice in her final days.
A Celebration of Life will be held at State Street Congregational Church in Portland on December 16, 2025 at 11:00 am followed by a parish hall reception. The service will be live-streamed for those unable to attend. It can be viewed on this website: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK_ShPulILcmJgHWnw0V_4Q/live
