Florida- Jordan Carroll (better known as J.C.) Smith, 25, passed away after a tragic accident while working. The son of Rick and Carrie-Ann Smith, he was born on June 6, 1986 in Portland Maine. He graduated from Deering High School in 2004 and went on to attend McGill University in Montreal. He graduated in 2009, earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. In the summer of 2010 he joined the crew of the Appledore at its summer mooring in Camden Maine, and soon discovered his passion for sailing. He decided to stay aboard the Appledore when it sailed to its winter location in Key West. He worked as the first mate on the schooner and he was known as “the Legend” among his friends in Key West. J.C. loved life and did his best to experience everything to the fullest extent. J.C. enjoyed skiing, bike riding, and rock climbing. He participated in the drama department in high school where he helped to construct sets for plays. It was a position that he did very well because he was capable of fixing or building anything he put his mind to. He always threw himself 100 % into anything he did. If it was set making he made the best sets. It was this quality that he was well known for when he worked at Samuel’s Bar and Grill for his uncle Sam Minervino. His friends and family knew him to be incredibly thoughtful, and always the first to volunteer for something difficult. He will be sorely missed. J.C. is survived by his parents, his sisters Robin Madden and her husband David, and Chelsea Smith-Wycoff, his nephew Noah Wycoff, grandparents Thomas and Delores “Dodi” Minervino and Jean Rachel Smith. He was predeceased by his grandfather Carroll L. Smith. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Monday January 30, 2012 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday January 31, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1342 Congress St. Portland. J.C. loved the sea; donations will go towards creating a scholarship at the Maine Maritime Academy, Development Office, PO Box C3, Castine ME, 04420, for those who are just as passionate about the sea as he was.
