Leonora was born in Portland, Maine, on June 17, 1933, as the eldest daughter to immigrants Luigi DiMillo and Maria (Rosetti) DiMillo, and died peacefully in Portland, Maine on July 20, 2023, at 90 years old after receiving last rites and being surrounded by family.
She grew up on Munjoy Hill with her siblings Anna, Gina, Giovanna, Francesca, and Remo, and had many stories of all the fun things they did with their friends and relatives on Hammond Street. She attended the old North School, having her First Holy Communion and her Sacrament of Confirmation at the beautiful Saint Peter’s Church. She was a graduate of Portland High School, class of 1951, and a member of their Glee Club.
On Oct 25, 1958, she married Richard Leonard Macdaid at Saint Peter’s Church. They initially lived on Walton Street in Portland, but then moved to Glenwood Avenue where they raised four children: Melissa, Leonard, Louis, and Theresa. In 1991 they retired to Ocala, Florida, but returned to Maine in 2005. She initially lived in Raymond and Falmouth with her daughter, and later moved into Fallbrook Woods in Portland, where she was cared for lovingly for almost 8 years. She has 11 grandchildren, and enjoyed cooking and making crafts for them and with them, as well as going to their events, and was called “Grammy” by many Raymond friends as well.
Leonora was predeceased in 2008 by her husband of nearly 50 years whom was the center of her life, and her dear sister Giovanna in 2015.
She loved Hammond Street and the Eastern Prom, her family, music and singing and dancing, cooking, crafts, long walks and fresh air, and family gatherings; and was best known for her fabulous meatballs and banana bread, her positive outlook, and her sweet smile.
We will miss you, Leonora, as a devoted Catholic, daughter, sister, friend, wife, aunt, Mama, and Grammy. You lived your faith and were kind to all.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 28, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Saint Peter's Church, 72 Federal St. Portland. Interment will follow at Old Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.jonesrichandbarnes.com for the Macdaid family.
