Mary Roberts Cannon, age 92, died on February 20, 2014 in Minneapolis, MN.
Mary was born on January 13, 1922, in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Mary was the daughter of the late Mable Forrester Roberts and Joe Nathan Roberts. After graduation from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1939, she earned her Bachelors of Science Degree, with honors from Howard University. Subsequently, she earned her Masters Degree from the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh. She was a life member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers.
In 1983 while employed as a licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker by the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Mary was awarded the prestigious Heart and Hands Award. She served as a Social Worker for 37 years and retired in 1987.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Reverend James R. Cannon, a United Methodist Minister who died in 1992. Also predeceasing Mary was her older sister Hazel.
With her husband and their two sons, she lived and worked in several states, however she retained her love for her native state of Maine, and for several years after retirement she returned to live in her home town, Old Orchard Beach, where she enjoyed long walks on the beach, water color painting, writing poetry, and puzzles. She was a member of the Washington Avenue United Methodist Church, the York County AARP, the National Association of Federal Employees, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Mary is survived by two sons, The Honorable James Forrester Cannon Sr. (Lois), of Minneapolis, MN and Retired Major David Wesley Cannon Sr. (Deborah), of San Antonio, TX; four grandchildren, David Jr., James Jr. (Montara), Daniel, and Leah, and a younger sister Rose. Also surviving are several extended family members and friends.
Care for Mary and her family has been entrusted to the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral home of Portland, Maine
An 11:00 AM funeral service for Mary will be held on March 1, 2014 at the Jones, Rich, and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland ME, with visitation one hour prior to service.
