Rachel Googins, 88, passed peacefully on June 9, 2013 surrounded by her family. She was born Rachel Louise Romprey on July 23, 1924 in Saco, Maine. She was the daughter of Jeffery and Evelyn (Sanborn) Romprey. She attended schools in Saco and Biddeford, graduating from Biddeford High School in 1943.
She was employed at the Saco Lowell Company when she met her husband, Laurence Googins. Together they moved to Hartford, Connecticut where she worked for several insurance companies. On her return to Maine, she was employed by Canal Bank and Casco Bank and Trust retiring in 1984.
Rachel attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Portland where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was an avid reader and found great pleasure in word games. She loved to play Bingo and enjoyed collecting vintage ceramics (also known as her “knick-knacks”). Rachel showed immense grace, wit and gratitude during the past few years as her health declined. She enjoyed the time she spent with her children, daughter-in law, and grandchildren and especially enjoyed extended family gatherings at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
She was predeceased by all nine of her brothers and sisters and her husband Laurence Googins, who died in 1974. She is survived by two sons, Edward J. Googins (and his wife Rebecca Kilbride) of Portland and their children Jennifer Googins Huston (and her husband Heath) and Jessica and E.J. Googins, all of Portland and David M. Googins of Springvale and his children Cody and Brittany Googins of South Portland and Michael Dube of Windham.
The family would like to thank the wonderful and considerate caregivers and staff at the Saint Joseph's Rehabilitation and Residence Center for their kindness, care, and courtesies extended to Rachel during her time with them.
