Richard George Lewis passed away on September 13, 2025, in Portland, Maine. Born on January 24, 1942, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Richard lived a life marked by intellectual curiosity, compassion, and a deep commitment to education and family.
Richard’s academic journey began at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. His passion for science led him to Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, where he completed both his Master’s degree and Doctorate in Biochemistry. These academic achievements laid the foundation for a lifelong dedication to teaching and learning. His first career for nearly 20 years was in biomedical research at the Worcester Institute and the VA Hospital in Boston.
For 27 years, Richard taught Chemistry at Scarborough High School. He was not only an educator but also a mentor who inspired generations of students to think critically and creatively. His classroom was a place where scientific inquiry met enthusiasm and encouragement. Richard took great joy in helping his students explore the wonders of Chemistry and the broader scientific world. His legacy as a teacher is one of inspiration, curiosity, and unwavering support for young minds.
Beyond the classroom, Richard embraced life with enthusiasm. He shared 31 loving years with his wife Leah Zuch. Together they cultivated a rich life filled with shared passions – animals, gardening, music, time by the sea – and many moments of joy and companionship. Their bond was one of mutual respect and deep affection.
Richard is also remembered with love by his son Erik Lewis of St. Louis, Missouri; Erik’s wife Laura; and his brother Ron Lewis and Ron’s wife Debbie of Exeter, Rhode Island. Richard’s family was a source of pride and happiness throughout his life.
A man of many interests, Richard found delight in cooking delicious vegetarian meals, tending to his garden, collecting N scale model trains, watching political podcasts, and immersing himself in jazz music. He had a special connection with animals throughout his life and was devoted to Diesel, his Staffordshire Bull Terrier companion.
Those who knew Richard will remember him as a caring man with a strong spirit and wry sense of humor. He enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge and insight on many topics with those around him through thoughtful conversation. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him: family members, friends, teaching colleagues, former students – and most deeply in the heart of his beloved wife Leah.
May Richard George Lewis be remembered always for the wisdom he shared and the lives he touched.
