It is with great sadness that the family of Richard George Powell, 74, of Portland, Maine, announce his passing. Richard was born in Portland, Maine in 1948 to George and Mary Ellen Powell. Richard is survived by his wife Carole (Bridges) Powell, children Debra Powell Doepp, Kevin Doepp, Donna Powell, Mandy Powell Gray and Shaun Gray. Richard loved being a Papa to Gabrielle Burke, Isabelle Burke, Lucia Burke, Zachary Doepp, Madelyn Doepp, Lily Doepp, Quintin Gray and Vivian Gray, and a Great Grandfather to Ivy Jane Chikuta. Richard was a big brother to siblings, George Powell III, John Powell, and Lori Shaw, and best friend to Lewis Tibbetts.
Richard graduated from South Portland High School in 1966 and University of Maine Orono in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He faithfully worked at New England Telephone Company beginning in 1972 through his retirement in 2015. His community contribution was serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Infinity Credit Union and Executive Director of Camp 207.
Richard and Carole met at First Baptist Church camp during the summer of 1963, brought their family each year, and served as counselors for many summers. Richard became Director of the camp in the late 1990’s and together in 2016, Richard and Carole brought it to the community and Camp 207 was established as a 501c3. Their passion for the ministry has allowed hundreds of youth to grow in their relationship with God and build meaningful friendships. Richard and Carole’s hope is that the experience would continue to make an impact on campers each year and for many years to come.
