

Stephen Michael Vail, 60, of Portland, Maine, passed away on March 10, 2026, while hiking a volcano in El Salvador—an adventure that reflected his deep love of travel and living life to its fullest. He was born on May 25, 1965, in Portland, where he remained a lifelong and devoted member of the community.
Stephen graduated from Deering High School in 1983 and immediately began a distinguished 23-year career in the United States Army. Serving from 1983 until 2006, he was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Infantry and retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Over the course of his military service, he was deployed to South Korea in 1988, served in Operation Desert Storm in 1990, and later in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. As a drill sergeant, he mentored and guided countless soldiers. His service and dedication were recognized with numerous honors, including the Bronze Star.
Following his retirement from the military, Stephen returned home to Portland, where he remained deeply involved in many aspects of his community. Stephen continued his commitment to public service as a correctional officer at the Cumberland County Jail, where he served for 13 years. A devoted Catholic, his faith was an important part of his life. He was a pillar in the AA community and contributed his time and energy to countless organizations, always willing to support others.
Stephen had a passion for adventure and travel, always seeking new experiences and meaningful memories. In recent years, he especially enjoyed boating and spending time by the water. He could often be found camping, relaxing at the beach, or walking through Evergreen Cemetery with his four-legged best friend, Moxie. Above all, Stephen treasured time with his family—whether attending sporting events, Broadway shows, concerts, or simply being together. He cherished time spent with his parents, siblings, and children, embracing every opportunity for connection and shared experiences.
Known for his generosity and kind spirit, Stephen would do anything for anyone. He had a remarkable ability to fix almost anything and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a loving father, son, brother, and friend whose presence brought strength, warmth, and joy to those around him.
Stephen was predeceased by his former wife, Debra Powers Vail. He is survived by his children, daughter Mercedes Vail and son Blaize Vail; his mother, Sharon Vail Landon and her husband Ricardo; his father, Richard Vail and his wife Pauline; his brother, Mark Vail and his wife Ana; and his sister, Stephanie Shimko. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, and community members who will deeply miss him.
Stephen Michael Vail lived a life defined by service, faith, love, and adventure. He will be greatly missed by so many, and his memory will live on in the lives he touched.
Visitation will be held at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St, Portland, Maine 04103, on April 10, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Parish, 72 Federal St, Portland, ME 04101, US, on April 11, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
A Committal Service will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, 672 Stevens Ave, Portland, Maine 04103, on April 11, 2026, from 11:00 am to 11:30 am, with final resting place at Evergreen Cemetery, 672 Stevens Ave, Portland.
