

Scarborough-William H. “Sonny” Winslow, 75 passed away peacefully on Monday, February 1, 2011 following a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Portland, ME April 2, 1935 a son of the late William J. and Estelle (Bibber) Winslow and was also predeceased by his stepfather Maurice Winslow. He grew up in Portland attending local schools. He spent many summers during his childhood in Harpswell, ME with his grandfather where he learned to love the ocean, lobstering and boating. He joined the US Marine Corps in 1953 and served a year in Korea during the Korean Conflict.
In his younger days he loved to hunt, fish, ski and snowmobile. His passion was NASCAR racing and he was fortunate to be able to attend several races at Daytona, FL and Loudon, NH. He also spent several years at Beechridge Motor Speedway watching his son race in the late model division. His favorite pastime was golf and spending time with his grandchildren fishing and boating on Casco Bay or just swimming in the pool.
He owned and operated American Northeast Glass, Inc. for many years until his retirement in 2009. He did a lot of glass work on many of the local schools. The business is now owned by his son.
William and his wife built a home in Scarborough in 1970, raised their two children and have resided there ever since.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Lou (Cardilli) Winslow, a son Kerry Winslow and his wife Becky of Limington, a daughter Gina L. MacVane and her husband Eric of Portland, a sister Patricia Stevenson and her husband Mike of Urbana, MO, four grandchildren, Nick and Luke Winslow, Stephanie and William MacVane, a nephew Mike Puiia and a niece Kristen Hazeltine.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation Sunday, February 6, 2-5 p.m. at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, February 7 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 611 Main St., So. Portland. Burial will be at a later date in the spring.
The family would like to thank the staff at MCCM, Maine Medical Center, Seaside Nursing Home, Hospice of Southern Maine and Beacon Hospice for the wonderful care he received with special thanks to Colleen and Pam.
