

Mr. Crutchfield was born on August 31, 1929 in Wright City, Oklahoma. He graduated from high
school in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, where he played varsity basketball, baseball and football all four
years.
He served in the US Coast Guard from 1951-1954, and was stationed in Astoria, aboard the buoy
tender ship Ivy, and also in Portland, Oregon. It was in Portland where he met Evelyn E. Stipe, and they
were married in December of 1953.
After a short stint teaching in Raymondville, Texas, the couple moved back to Portland, Oregon. In
1956, he began work as a physical education teacher and coach in the Reynolds District, (Glenfair,
and Columbia View/H.B. Lee middle school) where he worked until 1987. During his career he
coached football, basketball, and baseball and amassed a total of 358 wins, 118 losses and 5 ties.
In retirement, he played golf, watched sports on television, and traveled with his wife.
He died on August 20, 2018 from pneumonia.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, children Wade and Laura, six grandchildren, and one greatgrandchild.
His youngest child, Mark, died earlier this year.
A memorial service will be held at Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes on Friday, September 14 at
2pm.
