Anna Marie Golden passed away on November 29, 2010, at the age of 94. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Spicer and Sue Jacobsen, and her granddaughter, Jeanne Kilmer. She died exactly 50 years to the day, after her mother’s funeral and burial.
Marie was born on a farm, just outside of Foxboro, Wisconsin, on February 23, 1916.
She was the second eldest child of Ella Marie and William Ora Weaver. Her older brother Norman was born in 1914, and died in 1918, during the flu epidemic. Her younger brother George was born on September 14, 1919, and died on April 20, 1985. Her sister was born on September 8, 1921, and died of the flu on February 11, 1924. She loved life on the farm, playing with her brother George, and the many farm animals, that she made her pets. Her special pet, was her Jersey cow named Rose. She would take naps on Rose’s back, while her parents did the milking. Her love of all animals large and small, continued throughout her lifetime.
In the summer of 1924, her family moved to Superior, Wisconsin. In 1925, her parents purchased a store on Superior’s main street, Tower Ave., and they lived above the store.
She loved the store, waiting on customers, adding up the orders, and roller skating on the bare wood floors. She witnessed President Calvin Coolidge and his motorcade, as they came down Tower Ave., heading for a fishing vacation on the Brule River. She cherished the many happy memories of her time at the store.
In the winter of 1927, she and her brother George, both became ill with double pneumonia. They both had surgery to drain the fluid from their lungs. Marie was not expected to live through the night. She was given drops of strychnine every few hours to fight the infection, and it worked. Gradually Marie and George recovered from the illness.
Her parents divorced in 1927. She went to live with her father, and her brother stayed with her mother. In May of 1929, she and her father moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon,
This is where she met Glenn Golden. They were married on May 20, 1933. Marie and Glenn moved to Portland, Oregon in 1935, and purchased a small home on SE 28th Avenue. In September of 1937, she witnessed Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his motorcade, traveling down Powell Blvd., in front of Cleveland High School, after the dedication of Timberline Lodge. On April 28, 1940, they welcomed their daughter, Sandra. In the spring of 1944, they moved to a larger house, directly across the street. On December 30, 1944, they welcomed twins, Gary and Susan. Marie lived on SE 28th Avenue for 75 years.
On Thanksgiving morning, November 24, 1960, her mother passed away. Her husband Glenn died of cancer, on February 13, 1962, at 49 years of age. Marie went to work for the Karmel Korn shop at Lloyd Center, shortly after his death. Her one and only grandchild, Jeanne Marie, was born on December 29, 1966. Her son Gary drowned on the Clackamas River on July 10, 1976. She retired from the Karmel Korn shop in 1981.
Marie spent her retirement years enjoying the company of her family, taking trips with her daughters and granddaughter. She enjoyed gardening, and did all of her own yard work until the age of 85. She enjoyed music, movies, laughter, and the company of friends and family, as well as the furry and feathered family pets.
Marie’s graveside service will be held on Monday December 6, 2010, at Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home.
