Annette was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Raymond and Elsie Selinski. After graduating high school, Annette worked for Pan American Airlines as a flight attendant and airline representative. Her love of travel started with her first career and continued over her lifetime. She met her husband, Jack Guy, in Cleveland, Ohio. A former naval officer, Jack was at the time a menswear buyer for Higbee’s Department store. Jack and Annette were married on August 22, 1959, at St Monica Catholic Church in Cleveland, Ohio. A year later, they welcomed their first daughter, Chris, and Annette left Pan American to become a full-time mom. After the arrival of three more children, Jack took a job with Pendleton Woolen Mills in Portland, Oregon, and the family moved to the west coast, where they settled down.
With a strong desire to continue her world travels Annette decided to get back into the travel industry when the children were in high school, becoming a travel agent for a local company in Portland. She enjoyed taking part in the familiarization travel trips and cruises offered her and could be found on the beaches of Fiji, Tahiti, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, or on the streets of Hong Kong, Paris, or Rome. Annette was back exploring the world and she loved it!
In the late 1980s, after more than a decade of travel and a year in Honolulu, she had a wonderful opportunity to work for the University Club of Portland. She became the Assistant Manager and was known for her event and wedding planning. Annette took all that she learned in the travel business and coordinated beautiful weddings and lavish events for the club. She also took great pride in decorating the University Club for the holidays.
In 2001, Annette retried to Vancouver, Washington. Not yet ready to slow down, she got involved with a wonderful group of local women. They had luncheons and dinner parties and met at the local pool for swim aerobics. Annette loved dressing up and wearing glam sparkly tops, sunglasses, and handbags. She quite often could be found in bedazzled t-shirts, jackets, and dresses, and this proudly earned her the nickname “Hollywood” among her new group of friends.
Annette inherited her love of cooking and baking from her amazing Czech mom, and when she settled into retirement, she became known in the neighborhood for her wonderful cooking. On the menu were her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, nut roll, and her famous apple pie. Delivering her baked goods and extra dinners around to her neighbors gave her great joy.
Annette had a love of dogs, especially Malteses and Bichons. They were her loving companions and she spoiled them like they were her children. She always said, “My dogs keep me alive and bring me such joy, I don’t know where I would be without them.”
Annette is survived by her four children, Christine Balestreri (Richard), Jack Guy, Cynthia Easton (Mike), and Cathleen Roden (Don). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Katie Balestreri-Sampognaro, Matthew Easton, Riley Easton, and one great-granddaughter, Lucy Sampognaro.
A memorial service will be held graveside on Sunday, November 26th at 1:30 p.m. at Skyline Memorial Gardens, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd, Portland. Friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the organization Cindy works for Petros Network. https://petrosnetwork.org/
