Arline was born July 11, 1925 in Modesto, California to Clyde and Frances Chambers. In 1942, her family moved to Fort Bragg, California where she grew up, and eventually met her husband, Gerald Lawrence Hilbert during WWII. The two were married December 27, 1944 in Fort Bragg and moved to Rochester, New York in November of 1945 after the war, with their first child. Arline gave birth to eight more children in Rochester, and in 1955 moved back to California to be closer to her family. There, four years later, she gave birth to her and Gerald's tenth child in San Jose.
Twenty years later the family relocated to Portland, OR, where her husband entered the tavern business. After the children were grown, Arline continued to reside in the Portland area until she lost her husband of fifty-one years to a heart attack in 1995. She then relocated to Springfield, OR and began to have problems with her vision, eventually being diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. This disease took away not only her vision but the ability to do the things she so thoroughly enjoyed: cooking, gardening, sewing, knitting, traveling and reading the bible every day.
Arline later suffered a stroke while living in Idaho that temporarily paralyzed her left side and further impaired her vision. She recovered from the paralysis but needed assisted living going forward so she moved back to Portland where more of her children lived to assist with her care.
Over the next few years the aging process took its toll and we lost this beautiful woman, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She will be laid to rest with her husband, Gerald, in Willamette National Cemetery.
Arline was preceded in death by brothers Clyde, Gilbert, Gale, Thomas, Howard and sister Altavene, daughters Pat Mula, Pam Grieve, Marguerite Hilbert and son John.
She is survived by her sister Colleen Burcher of Ukiah, CA and brother David of CA , sons Jerry, Ron, Bill, Clyde, Mark and daughter Tina Bane, 26 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She is so loved and will be missed by all she touched...
Please join us in remembering Arline's life.
