The following are answers to questions written by Bernadine to her Grandchildren in a book called "A Grandparent Book":
Beginnings - I was 6 lbs 10 oz and healthy when I was born. My dad bought a brand new model "A" and jangled the keys in front of my mom to wake her up. That was his way of celebrating my birth. My confirmation name is "Therese". I was named after my Mom's best friend Bernadine Benjamin.
Young Life - My first home was at 707 N. 16th Ave Yakima, WA. It was a white 2 small bedroom home with a long room upstairs and a 1/2 basement. My best friend was Helen Berger. My favorite things as a child was china play dishes. I gave them to Debi years ago. I have one brother named Larry (Lawrence) born in Yakima November 14, 1934. My favorite toy was my Shirley Temple Doll and my set of 12 china dishes. My favorite book to read as a child was Heidie and my favorite story was "The Night before Xmas, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". My favorite hiding place as a small child was in a culvert that we covered with a blanket on an empty lot we owned next door to our house.
Grammer School Years - I attended St. Paul's in Yakima, WA and Holy Cross in Portland (6th and 7th grade). My favorite subjects were spelling and arithmetic. After school I walked home with the Andrea's and all the kids in our neighborhood. It was a good 3 miles. When I was older I would start dinner. My mom worked at Del Monte's and she was the head floor lady and all the people who worked there were under her. My chores at this time in my life included: making my bed, wiping the dishes and taking care of my brother Larry. I received a 25 cent a week allowance. I usually spent my allowance on funny books and candy.
High School - I attended St. Joseph's Academy (an all girl school) in Yakima, WA. My favorite teacher was Sister Charles (French Teacher). My favorite subjects were French and Home Economics. I did NOT like Algrebra. My favorite sports were Volley Ball and Football. I was not on any school teams because I worked from 3:30 to 5:30 at Hughes Dress Shop (and that is when the games and practice was). I belonged to the French Club. I dated Ed Johnich and Dale Wine. I wanted to date Ashman Brown (He became a Minister later in life). In the summer I loved laying out in the sun and swimiming in the ditches around Yakima when they were irrigated.
Moving Out - I left home when I was 20 and moved in with my grandmother and uncles in Portland.
Marriage - I met my husband through my cousin Lucille - he was a blind date. He was a good dancer and a lot of fun and he was from Yakima so he knew a lot of the people I knew. We also went to the same grade school in Yakima. We discussed marriage about 4 months after we met. He asked my Dad and Mom if he could marry me, then he came out to the car and asked me. My parents were very happy about our marriage. They liked him very much. We were married October 25, 1952 In Yakima, WA at St. Paul's Catholic Church by Father Stesher. I wore a long white gown with a train. The bodice was satin and French lace over it. My Aunt Marie made and designed the dress. We went to Victoria Canada and stayed at the Empress Hotel. I was very surprised by what a hard worker my husband was and that he was so sincere about making a home for us and how good he took care of me. He could do anything when he made up his mind to do it.
Religion: I believe in God. My favorite prayer is "The Memorie" and the prayer to St. Anthony to find something lost. Religion is a major factor in my life. I interpret the Bible strictly. Religion helped my when Cherie had mengitis when she was 2 months old. We were in Yakima for Thanksgiving and she had a fevor over 104 degrees in the afternoon and her head was pulling back. We took her to the doctor and he put her in the hospital in intensive care. She ended up being in the hospital 2 weeks. Papa had to go back to Portland without Debi and us. Prayers helped a lot. Religion was important to me during times of sickness, my marriage and death of my Mom, Dad and Brother.
