On July 31, 1941 Charles E. Pilot was born to Frank and Mary Pilot in Chicago, Illinois. Charles was the last of their three children. Both parents, as well as an older brother John Lewis who as an infant, preceded Charles into heavenly rest. Mary and the kids moved back to Alabama. Years later, Mary remarried to Johnny Pratt who helped raise Mary Frances and Charles. “Mr. Johnny”, as he was affectionately addressed, was Charles' father figure and role model.
The year following Charles’ graduation from Sylacauga High School, he married Virginia [Hicks]. A year later Charles Jr. was born. Charles Sr. enjoyed being a first time dad and was so proud to have a son. Unfortunately, the family was separated by divorce.
After Charles Sr.’s sister Mary Frances Thomas and niece Cherie visited Alabama from Portland, Oregon in 1967, Charles decided to travel to the west coast with them. He lived with his sister and brother-in-law Eddie C. Thomas in Portland, Oregon. Shortly thereafter was drafted into the United States Army. Charles was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and earned the rank of sergeant. He was honorably discharged after fulfilling his active duty service then honorably discharged from Army Reserves in 1975.
Charles married Barbara [Hill] in 1971 and became a stepfather to her young son Duayne White before the couple welcomed their daughter Serena two years later. Charles Jr joined them in Portland for a year before returning to Alabama. That marriage also dissolved. Charles Sr. had a brief third marriage in the early 1980s that did not produce additional children.
Charles enjoyed his truck driving profession for approximately 30 years during which time he drove interstate as well as local city delivery. He made many friends within the trucking industry. Charles received several commendations for his friendly demeanor, trustworthy character, and professionalism with customers as well as recognition for his numerous hours of safe driving.
Charles often said he loved and was so proud of his family. He leaves to honor and cherish his memory: Son Charles E. (Alfreda) Pilot Jr., Birmingham, AL; daughter Serena (André) Ashley, Portland, OR; sister Mary Frances Thomas Chandler, AZ; Five grandchildren: Charles E. (Andrea) Pilot III, Christopher (Torrielle) Pilot, Sinclair Ashley, Sierra Ashley, Aneres Ashley; Three Great Grandchildren: DeMauryé Pilot, Charlae Pilot, and Audrea Pilot; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and beloved longtime friends.
We love you [Daddy/Granddaddy/Brother]! Rest in peace.
