Constance Leatherwood, 91, passed away on Jan. 12, 2012, in Oregon City. She was born in London, England, on Sept. 15, 1920, to Ellen Mary and Malcolm Lupton Brown and remained a proud British citizen and supporter of the Queen and royal family throughout her long life. Her father worked for the British Customs Service and in 1927 was posted to Houston, TX, where Connie and her younger brother and sister grew up. In 1938 the family returned to London, just in time to experience the horrors of the Blitz. They were bombed out of their home in Blackheath four times before her father was
killed in a bombing raid. During WWII, Connie and her sister Elsie courageously
returned to the US on one of the first civilian passenger ships to defy the Nazi naval
blockade.
Connie married Army veteran Leslie Mason in Houston right after the war. Shortly thereafter, Leslie was tragically killed in an industrial accident. Connie married Thomas W. “Bill” Leatherwood in 1947. A refrigeration engineer from Georgia Tech, Bill
worked for the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos during the war. Connie and Bill had three sons, Timothy Michael, David Myron, and Andrew Watson.
Bill died in 1965, leaving Connie with three children to raise on her own. She worked as a bookkeeper in Houston. She and Andrew moved to Lake Oswego, OR, in 1975, following her son, David. She was employed as the principal bookkeeper at Wizer’s Grocery in Lake Oswego for many years. Connie is survived by her 3 sons: Tim (Gail) of Houston, TX, David (Janet) of Portland, and Andrew (Shannon) of Oregon City; 7 grandchildren: John, Brian, Mary, Holli, Dustin, Michael, and Benjamin; and 3-1/2 great-grandchildren. Her sister, Elsie, and brother, James, predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 18, 3:00 pm, at Ross Hollywood Chapel, NE 47th and Sandy Blvd. Connie will be laid to rest next to Bill at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston, TX.
