Dan Harrington passed away peacefully at home, Thursday, April 21, 2016, in the presence of his family. He was born in Portland, Oregon, to John & Catherine (O’Shea) Harrington of Co. Cork, Ireland. He attended Ascension grade school, then Columbia Prep (1941-1945) starring in football (quarterback), basketball and baseball, and served as student body president as a senior. Dan attended the University of Portland (1945-1950), interrupted by a year of service in the Air Force (’46). He was a star, sharp-shooting, freshman forward for the Pilots. After graduating with a BS in Business, Dan married Anne Marie Zenner in Oct. 1950, and later made their home in Eastmoreland, where their family grew to 7 children. Dan was a pillar of the Holy Family Catholic Church & School for 61 years. He was a St. Farm agent for 34 years with an office on NE Broadway. Dan was a humble, humorous man, a great provider, a loving husband and father, a deeply faithful Catholic, the best dancer at any party, a lover of sport (he would have played golf endlessly if he could), a coach of CYO youth sports and he dedicated his life to the service of others. In 1952, Dan was one of 8 U of P graduates to co-found the Blanchet House - dedicated to serving daily meals to those in need. An active member of St. Vincent de Paul, Dan delivered Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets every year since 1959, and, upon retiring in 1994, he was a fixture at St. Vincent de Paul’s, volunteering in any capacity needed, 2-3 days a week, until this very year. Dan was preceded in death by his parents John & Catherine, and siblings Bernie, the Rev. Emmet, Denny and Mary Catherine. He is survived by his wife of 65 yrs, Anne Marie, children Janice McNamee, Michael, MaryAnne Ulring (Rich), Maureen, Daniel, Laura O’Keefe (Jim), Molly Harrington-Posner, 11 grandchildren and innumerable cousins, nieces and nephews, who all remember him for his sweet smile and impish, Irish wit.
