Dolly and husband Joseph, who preceded her in death on July 3, 2004, were the parents of thirteen children. They raised nine of their children in Helena, Montana, moved to Portland and raised four more Judges. She was the main support for her husband and children, fixing three meals a day and doing at least three loads of laundry six days a week. Still Dolly had time to watch over her children’s spiritual, physical, and emotional wellbeing.
It wasn’t all work. She and Joe traveled to Puerto Rico and Ireland and were thrilled to meet the Irish grandparents and relatives they had heard about. Also included in the family fun activities were many reunions with all the Judge relatives. The children have special memories of their mother playing the piano, hosting bridge parties, taking them to Granny and Grandad’s farm, six hours away, and driving to the Portland air base to watch the jets fly in. Every Sunday the family would go to church, usually separated into two groups.
Joe and Dolly were members of St. Rita’s parish and later the Madeleine parish where she was a member of the Altar Society. Joe and Dolly were later members of Holy Rosary parish where she volunteered to help care for the altar linens. Dolly also volunteered at Albertina Kerr Nursery where she helped to prepare luncheons.
She is survived by twelve children: Ann (Mike) Wittmayer, Dan (Dianne), Mike (Sharon), Patrick, Dick (Jan), Tim (Darcy), Theresa McElrath, Margaret (Mark) Chapin, Monica (Ken) Hart, Mary (George) McInnis, Tony, and Kathleen. Steve (Linda), preceded his mother in death on January 20, 2022. Happy events include twenty-seven grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Mom saw good in everyone she met and often called them “Honey”. Some responded by calling her “Mom” or “Grandma”. We miss you, Mom. We miss you, Dolly.
