Don was stationed in Japan after WWII, playing saxophone in the Army band, and enjoyed his time serving before being honorably discharged. He worked briefly as a steel worker before going into the upholstery business, owning his own shop for many years in Milwaukie.
Although active with the VFW, Don’s primary interest was the Boy Scouts of America, and he served in many positions as a Troop leader in Portland and Milwaukie. With the Scouts, he placed flags to honor veterans for many patriotic holidays over the years and earned the Silver Beaver Award, which recognizes Scouters of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service within their council.
Don was known as a jokester, and always with a kind word to and about everyone. He was a great storyteller and lived a happy, full life.
He is survived by a son, two daughters, and a grandson.
In lieu of flowers, donations to a local Boy Scout troop in his name would be most welcome by Don’s family.
A private family inurnment with honors is to take place at Willamette National Cemetery.
