Dorothy was born on February 26, 1924 in Wauna, WA to Sylvester and Helen Edwards, the sixth of nine children. She grew up during the depression in rural Gig Harbor Washington. She was a shy but excellent student in her multi-grade classroom and continued for a semester to University of Washington in Seattle, until WWII broke out. She worked at a bank, and then at Boeing during the war. After the war she moved to Portland to stay with her sister and niece for a while, where she met Max Moomaw on a sunny day after a visit to Blue Lake, thanks to a flat tire. They married shortly thereafter and commenced a life of following jobs hauling logs throughout southern Oregon and northern California. During that time they had two children, Larry and Cindy, both born in Gold Beach, Oregon. Max switched to long haul trucking and they settled in Beaverton, Oregon in 1958.
No matter where they lived, Dorothy always managed to make it a cozy home, filled with good food and laughter. She was a good cook and every meal was accompanied by homemade applesauce, and most were accompanied by homemade dinner rolls, often followed by pie. She always had cookies in the freezer, and her cinnamon rolls were legendary. Visitors, whether invited or just dropping in, were always welcomed with good food and a listening ear.
She was a hard worker while Max was on the road, maintaining the household and doing the yard work on their over-sized lot. She handled the bookkeeping and routinely helped with truck maintenance. She loved to play cards with her friends, who would visit for hours and good naturedly yell at each other. She was a great mother who cared for her children with love and humor. But she really shined as a grandmother to Larry’s five children, Keith, Ryan, Michael, Daniel and Jennifer, whom she spent many hours with.
She will be remembered for her warmth and love, sense of humor, dedication to hard work, and for being a good listener.
